According to Mundo Deportivo, Filipe Luis, the current head coach of Brazilian Serie A club Flamengo and former national team defender, could potentially take over as coach of Atletico Madrid.
Atletico’s management views the 39-year-old Luis as a primary candidate should the current head coach, Argentine Diego Simeone, decide to leave. Simeone has been at the helm since December 2011. The Brazilian, who played for Atletico from 2010 to 2014 and again from 2015 to 2019, is highly regarded not only for his professional skills but also for his personal qualities.
Currently, Flamengo, under Filipe Luis’s leadership, hold the top position in the Brazilian Championship standings, accumulating 24 points after 11 matches in the 2025 season, with one game in hand. The club has also claimed both the Cup and Supercup titles in Brazil.
In the 2024/2025 season, Atletico Madrid finished with bronze medals in La Liga, placing third with 76 points from 38 matches. Additionally, the team is currently third in Group B of the 2025 Club World Cup, having lost to France's Paris Saint-Germain (0-4) and defeated the Seattle Sounders from the USA (3-1).
