Oliver Kahn, the former Bayern Munich goalkeeper, European champion in 1996, and World Cup silver medalist in 2002 with Germany, has decided against the idea of buying the French football club Bordeaux.
After reviewing the financial, operational, and legal information that was only made available to us late last week, we chose not to invest the approximately 50 million euros initially planned to return FC Girondins de Bordeaux to its rightful place in Ligue 1.
On July 23, 2024, Bordeaux's press service officially announced that the club, which competed in Ligue 2, would be playing in the National Championship 2, the fourth tier of French football, due to financial difficulties in the upcoming 2024/2025 season. Just two days later, Bordeaux notified the French Football Federation (FFF) of their resignation from professional status.
In the recently concluded season, the Aquitaine club under coach Bruno Irles earned 48 points over 30 rounds, finishing fourth in the National 2 Group B standings. Bordeaux could be relegated to at least Regional League 2 (D-6) if the club issues a tender or considers selling to settle existing debts.
The Girondins boast six Ligue 1 championship titles (1949/1950, 1983/1984, 1984/1985, 1986/1987, 1998/1999, 2008/2009) and four French Cup victories (1940/1941, 1985/1986, 1986/1987, 2012/2013).
