Portugal’s Football Federation disciplinary council fined FC Porto €3,190 over offensive chants aimed at Benfica coach Jose Mourinho, reports Publico.
The official decision emphasized that fans violated bans on “verbal insults of a discriminatory nature that degrade human dignity on the basis of gender, race or similar grounds.”
The incident occurred on September 19 during Porto’s 3-0 league win over Rio Ave. In the 86th minute, Porto fans chanted insults targeting Mourinho.
Mourinho, 62, returned to Benfica in mid-September after 25 years. He previously managed Porto, winning the UEFA Cup and Champions League, and worked early on with Sporting Lisbon’s staff.
Mourinho has called leading Benfica “a tremendous honor.”
