
Jorge Costa, the former captain of FC Porto and UEFA Champions League winner, has died at the age of 53 due to a heart attack. This news was reported by the Portuguese newspaper A Bola.
According to the publication, the tragedy occurred shortly after Costa's interview with SportTV at the club's training facility. Around 12:30 local time, he suddenly felt unwell. He was rushed to São João Hospital, where he was placed in intensive care, but unfortunately, the former footballer could not be saved. Costa had previously suffered a heart attack in 2022.
Costa played for FC Porto from 1990 to 2005 and served as team captain for a long while. He won numerous trophies with the club, including eight championship titles, the Champions League, and the UEFA Cup among others. On the international stage, he represented the Portuguese national team in 50 matches, helping the team win a bronze medal at Euro 2000.
After retiring from professional football, Costa transitioned into coaching, leading several clubs including Braga, Paços de Ferreira, and Farense. He also managed clubs in Romania, Cyprus, and the Gabon national team. At the time of his death, he held the position of sporting director at FC Porto.
