A bronze memorial to the late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash, was unveiled at the Portugal national team’s training complex, the national team’s press service reported.
On July 3 news broke that Jota and his brother André Silva, who played for Penafiel, had died in a road accident in northwest Spain in the province of Zamora. Their car lost control and caught fire.
A commemorative ceremony for Diogo Jota was held Tuesday at the national team base. Attendees included Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, representatives of the Portuguese Football Federation and the entire national squad.
The Jota memorial is shaped like the national team jersey. A similar monument stands in honor of former Porto defender Jorge Costa. Costa, who later served as Porto’s sporting director, died August 5 of cardiac arrest.
Diogo Jota was 28 years old. He was a two-time UEFA Nations League winner with Portugal and won the English Premier League and the FA Cup with Liverpool.
