Portugal Scores Nine Goals Without Ronaldo for the Second Time in History

The Portugal national team matched its personal record for most goals scored in a single match by defeating Armenia 9-1 in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

This feat had previously been achieved during the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers, when Portugal beat Luxembourg 9-0. Notably, Cristiano Ronaldo was absent from both matches.

Portugal finished first in Group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, securing direct qualification for the tournament, which will take place from June 11 to July 19 in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.

The current world champion is the Argentina national team, which defeated the then-reigning champions France 3-3 (4-2 on penalties) in the final of the 2022 World Cup.
