Ronaldo Gestured for Irish Players to Wipe Away Their Tears in Match Against Portugal

After receiving a yellow card in the 59th minute of the 2026 World Cup qualifier against Ireland (0-2), Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo made a provocative gesture suggesting the Irish players stop crying.

Initially, the referee had shown the 40-year-old a yellow card for an elbow to the back of Irish defender Dara O’Shea, but after reviewing the incident via video assistant referee (VAR), the main official upgraded the decision to a red card.

Following four matches in Group F, Ireland sits in third place with four points. Portugal leads the group with 10 points.
