
Two supporters of Saint-Etienne have received seven-month suspended prison sentences for throwing coins at an assistant referee during the club’s 2024-25 Ligue 1 match against Lyon (2-1), according to L’Equipe.
The match was halted in the 45th minute after a projectile thrown from the stands struck assistant referee Mahdi Rahmouni in the head. Referee Francois Letexier led both teams off the field, and they remained in the locker room area for about 30 minutes.
The defendants apologized in court, admitting they had thrown several coins from the stands under the influence of alcohol without aiming at anyone in particular. Prosecutor had requested nine-month suspended sentences and a minimum two-year stadium ban for the accused, the report added.
In the 2025-26 season, Saint-Etienne compete in Ligue 2. After 13 matchdays, the club sits third in the standings with 23 points. On Matchday 14, they face Troyes on November 8 at 22:00 GMT+3.
Lyon, meanwhile, sit sixth in the current Ligue 1 table with 20 points after 11 matches. On Matchday 12, they will play PSG on November 9 at 22:45 GMT+3.
