FIFA President Gianni Infantino faced backlash from European football officials after participating in a tour with U.S. President Donald Trump.
This decision resulted in Infantino arriving late to the FIFA Congress, which displeased UEFA. The organization emphasized that an unexpected change in the schedule of one of the world's leading football events for political reasons is unacceptable and harms the interests of the sport.
UEFA reminded everyone that football should stay at the forefront and remain free from political manipulation.
UEFA stated, as reported by Sky News
We are all in post to serve football; from the streets to the podium, and Uefa members of the Fifa council felt the need on this occasion to make a point that the game comes first and to leave as originally scheduled.
Infantino has served as FIFA’s president since 2016.
