Former French footballer and Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane explained why he ended his playing career at the age of 34.
Zinedine Zidane for La Gazzetta dello Sport
When I decided to retire after the match against Villarreal, it was a conscious decision. I just stopped enjoying the trips and staying in hotels. Even when playing at home, you still had to move to a hotel. So I decided to retire. Physically, I could have played for another two or three years, but all those trips and training camps began to tire me out.
During his playing career, Zidane played for clubs such as Cannes, Bordeaux, Juventus, and Real Madrid.
It is worth noting that FIFA named him the best player in the world three times. The Frenchman retired in 2006.
Also, as Real Madrid’s coach, he won the UEFA Champions League three times in a row (2016, 2017, 2018). In addition, he led Madrid to two Spanish league titles (2017, 2020).
Currently, Zidane has been without a coaching job for a long time. According to him, he dreams of coaching the French national team.
