NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly was asked about the possibility of Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. On Wednesday, September 17, Ovechkin turned 40.

Not today. The Hall of Fame is an independent organization. We don’t make induction decisions. They have an independently formed selection committee that handles the process.
Ovechkin’s current contract with the Capitals runs through the end of the 2025–26 season. In April he passed Canadian great Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 regular-season goals in the NHL. Ovechkin now has 897 goals.
