Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, Olympic gold medalist from Vancouver and three-time Stanley Cup champion, officially announced his retirement, confirmed by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Fleury’s farewell game was a preseason match where Pittsburgh beat Columbus 4–1. The 40-year-old Canadian played 20 minutes, saved eight shots, and was named the game’s best player.
Fleury originally planned to retire after the last NHL season when his contract with the Minnesota Wild expired. However, he accepted an offer to play a farewell game with Pittsburgh, the team he spent most of his career with and won his Stanley Cups. He signed a short-term contract to retire before the new season started.
Drafted first overall by Pittsburgh in 2003, Fleury played 691 regular-season and 115 playoff games for the Penguins. Besides three Stanley Cups, he won the Vezina Trophy and also played for the Vegas Golden Knights, the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Minnesota Wild. He won Olympic gold with Canada’s national team.
