Cormier Defends Referee's Stoppage in Lewis vs. Teixeira Fight

Former UFC champion in two divisions Daniel Cormier responded to fans' negative reactions regarding the referee's stoppage during the fight between Derrick Lewis and Tallison Teixeira at UFC on ESPN 70.

Daniel Cormier
People saying there was a bad stoppage… Teixeira grabbed the case to pull himself up. Referee needs to take a point. He can’t stop the finish to take the point, so you stop the fight. Teixeira was out. You can’t grab the cage to pull yourself up to your feet and then say it was a bad stoppage.

To recap, Lewis won the fight by technical knockout just 35 seconds into the match.

Lewis's previous bout was against Rodrigo Nascimento in May 2024 at UFC on ESPN 56, where he also won by technical knockout in the third round, bringing his record to 20 wins, 12 losses, and one no contest.

Teixeira had previously entered the octagon against Justin Tafa in February during UFC 312, winning by technical knockout in the first round. His record stands at eight wins and one loss.
