Former LFA interim champion in the strawweight division, Natalia Kuziutina, gave an exclusive interview to Telecomasia.net about her early training experiences in MMA after transitioning from judo, a sport she dedicated 20 years to.
“Before coming to America, I had never worn gloves, never fought, and never sparred. Everything was new for me here. My coaches say it was very funny when I first put on the gloves: ‘You couldn’t box at all; you just charged at your opponents, took them down, and either choked them out or twisted their arms. It was fun to watch.’ Now everyone likes seeing my progress.
I had conflicts in the gym with the girls I competed against. I gave 100 percent in every training session, which made me unpopular. I fought hard and didn’t control my strength when I hit. ‘Sorry, I’m only learning striking techniques. I can apply submissions carefully, but striking? Not yet.’ My coaches would scold me, and some didn’t want to spar with me. That’s fine. Now the relationships in the gym are good with everyone.
It’s worth noting that the 36-year-old Natalia Kuziutina is a four-time European champion, a silver medalist at the World Championships, and a bronze medalist at the Olympics in judo. She has been competing in MMA since 2022, recording eight wins and one loss.
