The current UFC welterweight champion, Islam Makhachev, expressed readiness to fight Kamaru Usman and believes that this fight could attract maximum fan attention.
"I said in an interview that I want to fight Usman. But for some reason, the media doesn't believe in this fight. My personal opinion is that Usman will steamroll through all these new guys like Michael Morales, Carlos Prates. These guys have not yet proven their worth," Makhachev said in an interview with the YouTube channel Red Corner MMA.
In terms of media promotion, we would be able to promote this fight well and put on a good show. There are many options. The welterweight division has come alive. We will see. I don't care who they offer. The UFC should make an offer soon. I believe I will be able to keep the belt in this weight class for a long time and feel comfortable there.
Makhachev last fought Jack Della Maddalena in November of this year in the main event of UFC 322 in New York, USA. In that bout, Islam won by unanimous decision and became the UFC welterweight champion. He has a record of 28 wins and one loss.
Makhachev’s UFC debut took place in May 2015. His opponent then was American Leo Kuntz. That fight ended in Islam’s favor via submission in the second round.
