Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor received approval from an Irish court to serve legal documents to the television channel Sky News in a defamation case.
The reason for the suit was an incident outside the courthouse last November, where a channel journalist addressed the fighter, calling him a rapist after the conclusion of a civil trial concerning sexual assault allegations.
Following the hearing, the jury ordered McGregor to pay the plaintiff €206,000 in compensation. However, according to the Irishman's lawyers, the reporter violated the law by making offensive statements publicly. The deadline for filing such lawsuits is limited to one year, and the fighter's team approached the court just before the deadline expired.
The case will now proceed through the legal system, and McGregor intends to seek the exoneration of his name in a different format.
McGregor last fought against Dustin Poirier in July 2021 at UFC 264. In that bout, Conor suffered a defeat by technical knockout after being unable to continue due to a leg injury. His record stands at 22 wins and six losses.
