Former interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier has spoken out following his loss to BMF titleholder Max Holloway at UFC 318.
Dustin Poirier
I just being inside the eye of the storm, it felt a lot closer to me. I really thought it might have been 2-2 going into the fifth [round]. Mike Brown checked the scorecards when we got to the locker room and I think the judges gave me different rounds. I think all the judges gave him the second round. I thought I almost had him out. He hurt me, too, but I thought my shot when I followed up with elbows, I was cracking him. He told me in the medical tent, ‘Hey man, you had me out.’ We couldn’t hear the bell. Being in the fight, it felt a lot closer than that. When I heard the judges’ [scores], I was like no way.
On July 20 in New Orleans, the fighters faced off for the third time, with Holloway winning by unanimous decision (48-47 and 49-46 twice).
Their first encounter took place in February 2012 at UFC 143, where Poirier won by submission (triangle choke and elbow lock) in the first round. In April 2019, at UFC 236, Dustin defeated Holloway by unanimous decision. Poirier's record now stands at 30 wins and 10 losses, with one no contest. Holloway boasts a record of 27 wins and 8 losses.
