Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen said he received a call from Islam Makhachev's manager Ali Abdelaziz after he criticized the promotion's former lightweight champion.
Chael Sonnen quoted by Sportskeeda
I got a call from Ali Abdelaziz, who is a very good friend of mine, who is not happy, who is saying the same thing that you are saying. That I'm calling out Islam for cowardice. I do not blame him of cowardice. I'm saying the fact pattern in history, when we look back, the fact pattern is no different than I'm claiming it is, which is that he left when he was challenged, and that did happen.
Makhachev last stepped into the octagon against Renato Moicano in January of this year at UFC 311. Islam won that fight in the first round with a choke hold and defended the UFC lightweight championship belt. He has 27 wins and one loss to his name.
Sonnen last fought against Anderson Silva under boxing rules in June 2024. That bout went the full distance and ended in a draw. Chael has 31 wins, 17 losses and one draw to his record in MMA.
