Emelianenko and Filipović previously met in August 2005 as part of the Pride FC league. In that bout, Fedor secured a victory by unanimous decision.

Emelianenko's MMA record is 40 wins, seven losses, and one no-contest. Filipović's record is 38 wins, 11 losses, and two draws, with one additional bout ruled a no-contest.
