UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis has lauded the career of lightweight champion Ilia Topuria, who previously held the title in the featherweight division.

I’m super happy for him, he’s one of the special characters. He’s gonna be a Hall of Famer, no doubt. He is the first unbeaten guy to hold two titles, so I’m super happy for him and I rate him very highly as an all-around fighter, knocking out three legends – I think he’s incredible. In my opinion, he’s one of the best, if not the best, in the UFC right now.
Recall that du Plessis is set to defend his title against Khamzat Chimaev on August 17 in Chicago, USA, as part of UFC 319.
Chimaev last entered the octagon in October 2024 at UFC 308, where he secured victory over Robert Whittaker by submission in the first round. He holds an impressive record of 14 wins and no losses.
Du Plessis's most recent fight occurred in February 2025 at UFC 312, where he won against Sean Strickland by unanimous decision. His overall record now stands at 23 wins and two losses.
