The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, which regulates the UFC 316 tournament, to be held June 8 in Newark, has not approved changes made by the Association of Boxing Commissions to the Unified Rules of MMA, so competitors at the event will not be able to use “12-6” elbow strikes.
The old definition of “grounded opponent” will also be used, so fighters will only need to touch the mat with their hand to avoid being kicked in the head.
As a reminder, the headliner of the tournament will be Georgian fighter Merab Dvalishvili and American Sean O'Malley, who will challenge for the bantamweight title.
In the co-main event of the night American fighters Julianna Peña and Kayla Harrison will fight for the championship belt in the women's bantamweight division.
