Berlin has officially expressed its desire to hold the Olympic Games in 2036, and is also considering the possibility of bidding to host the Games in 2040 or 2044. This is reported by the AP news agency.
If the International Olympic Committee approves the bid, the Olympics could return to the German capital exactly 100 years after the 1936 Games.
Nevertheless, the idea has drawn criticism from part of the city's citizens. The movement “NOlympia Berlin” has already announced its intention to organize a petition to hold a referendum against the Olympics. The main reason for discontent is the possible use of the park on the territory of the former Tempelhof airport as an Olympic object.
In addition to Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia have also announced the possibility of submitting a joint bid to host the Games in the same years.
