According to Bild, the body of two‑time Olympic biathlon champion Laura Dahlmeier will most likely be transported out of the Pakistani mountains.
A mountain guide said a rescue team is already heading to the site of the accident. Earlier there had been concerns that the athlete’s remains might not be found.
Dahlmeier, 32, died after being struck by falling rocks during an ascent in the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan. The incident occurred on July 28 at about 5,700 meters. A few days later her location was identified from a helicopter, but evacuation was impossible at the time due to the remote terrain and high risk.
Earlier, the German had legally recorded her wish that in an emergency no one should put their life at risk to save her, and she had expressed the desire to remain in the mountains after death.
At the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, Dahlmeier won two gold medals and one bronze. She is a seven‑time world champion and the overall World Cup winner for the 2016/17 season. She retired from professional sport in 2019.
