FIDE Strips Romanian Grandmaster Shevchenko of His Title Over Cheating

FIDE’s Ethics and Disciplinary Commission confirmed the suspension of Romanian chess player Kirill Shevchenko and decided to strip him of his grandmaster title.

In October 2024 Shevchenko was seen with a phone in the restroom during a game at the Spanish club championship. He was accused of external help by the organizers, who subsequently removed him from the tournament and assigned him losses for all his games.

Shevchenko’s suspension runs from October 19, 2024, to October 18, 2026. The probationary period for the sanctions expires on October 18, 2027.
