IBU Shocked by Death of 27-Year-Old Biathlete Bakken

The President of the International Biathlon Union (IBU), Olle Dahlin, has expressed his condolences following the passing of Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken.

Dahlin was quoted as saying by the organization's press service:

The IBU is deeply shocked and saddened by the tragic news of Sivert Bakken's sudden death. His passing at such a young age is impossible to comprehend but he will not be forgotten and he will forever remain in our hearts.

Dahlin also added that comprehensive support would be provided to the athlete’s family and loved ones.

On December 23, the 27-year-old Bakken was found dead in his hotel room at the Italian ski resort of Val di Fiemme. The cause of death is currently being investigated. According to Emilie Nordskar, acting general secretary of the Norwegian Biathlon Union, the organization is in constant contact with the Italian police working at the scene.

Bakken was a two-time 2016 Youth Olympic gold medalist in the pursuit and mixed relay, a three-time European champion (2021, 2025), and the winner of the small Crystal Globe in 2021-2022 World Cup mass start.
