Italian gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli has been placed in a medically induced coma following a serious injury during the 2025 University Games. This information was shared by Steve Butcher, the technical coordinator of the International Gymnastics Federation, on social media.

The incident took place on Wednesday when 23-year-old Bonicelli landed on his neck while performing on the rings during the team competition. He was evacuated from the venue on a stretcher and taken to the nearest hospital.
In light of this incident, the Italian gymnastics team has decided to withdraw from the competition. The University Games in Germany are set to end on July 27.
