A 53-year-old American driver, Robbie Brewer, died in North Carolina during a Sportsman race at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Brewer lost control and at high speed hit a safety barrier on one of the oval track's turns. The impact was so severe that the car suffered heavy damage, and rescuers had to cut the bodywork to extract the driver.
FloRacing reports that the driver suffered a heart attack during the race that may have caused the crash.
This is the fourth fatality at this track attributed specifically to a driver suffering heart problems.
