Venus Williams Becomes Oldest Match Winner at WTA Tournament in 21 Years

45-year-old Venus Williams from the USA has become the second oldest player in history to win a match at a WTA tournament. In the first round of the competition in Washington, she defeated fellow American Peyton Stearns with a score of 6-3, 6-4, according to the statistics portal Opta Sport.

The oldest player to win a match at a WTA tournament remains Martina Navratilova, who played for Czechoslovakia and the USA. She won against Colombian player Catalina Castano in the first round of Wimbledon 2004 when she was 47 years old.

In the next round of the WTA 500 tournament in Washington, Venus Williams will face Poland's Magdalena Fręch, currently ranked 24th in the world.

The tournament in Washington runs from July 21 to July 27.

It is worth noting that 45-year-old Venus is a seven-time Grand Slam champion and a former world number one.

Currently, Venus Williams is ranked 1151st in the WTA world rankings.
