Another exciting football day is upon us, and fans are in for a real treat across Europe’s top leagues. PSG will take on Flamengo in Qatar for the final of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup. ManCity will welcome Brentford to the Etihad in the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup, while Newcastle might be well on their way to a consecutive EFL semifinal appearance. We tip PSG to win this continental trophy as they’ve yearned for it after their defeat to Chelsea in the Club World Cup finals. Let's analyze the teams’ forms, key stats, and my opinion on the upcoming game.

The FIFA Intercontinental Cup final brings together two very different footballing worlds, as Paris Saint-Germain face Flamengo in what promises to be a captivating showdown. Europe’s star-studded champions go up against South America’s most prolific side, with both teams chasing global recognition and the chance to lift a prestigious world title.

PSG comes into the final after a challenging start to the new season, especially when measured against their remarkable campaign last year, when they swept aside all domestic and continental competition. The only thing missing from that historic run was a first global crown, as they fell 3–0 to Chelsea in the Club World Cup final.

Flamengo, on the other hand, arrives riding a wave of success. They edged Palmeiras 1–0 in Lima, Peru, to win the Copa Libertadores, becoming the first Brazilian club to lift the trophy four times. That continental triumph was followed by domestic glory, as they also secured the league title, capping an outstanding season under Felipe Luís.

On their road to the Intercontinental Cup final, the Brazilian giants eased past Cruz Azul with a 2–1 win before producing a confident 2–0 victory over Pyramids in the semifinals. With momentum on their side, Flamengo now stand one step away from adding another major honour to an already memorable year.

The Etihad Stadium will host an intriguing EFL Cup quarter-final as Premier League rivals Manchester City and Brentford go head-to-head.

Manchester City have not progressed beyond this stage of the competition since lifting the trophy in 2021, when they defeated Tottenham in the final. This season, reaching the final stages of the EFL Cup is important for Pep Guardiola, especially with inconsistency creeping into City’s performances across competitions. The hosts eased past Huddersfield and Swansea in the earlier games, but Brentford now presents a tougher test in the quarter-finals.

Brentford arrive in Manchester searching for a lift after a difficult spell in the league. The Bees are without a win in their last three matches, most recently settling for a 1–1 draw against newly promoted Leeds United on Sunday. With league form staggering, the Carabao Cup offers a chance for redemption, though it will be a daunting task against one of the league’s heavyweights at the Etihad.

ManCity vs Brentford probable lineup;

ManCity's possible Starting Lineup (4-2-3-1)

Trafford– Lewis, Khusanov, Ake, O'Reilly  –  Rico Gonzalez, Divine Mukasa,  – Oscar Bobb, Cherki, Savinho - Haaland

Head Coach: Pep Guardiola

Brentford's possible Starting Lineup (4-2-3-1)

Valdimarsson– Rico Henry, Van den Berg, Ethan Pinnock, Benjamin Arthur, – Mathias Jensen, Vitaly Janelt, – Mikkel Damsgaard, Lewis-Potter, Romelle Donovan – Schade

Head Coach: Keith Andrews

Newcastle United and Fulham square off on Wednesday night with a place in the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup on the line, and it feels like one of those ties that could quietly turn into a very entertaining contest. Both sides have plenty of quality, but their momentum heading into this clash makes a difference.

Newcastle are the current champions of the EFL Cup, after defeating Liverpool in the final last season, and the trophy became their first domestic trophy since the 1954-55 FA Cup. Newcastle’s first game in the EFL Cup was against Bradford City, and the Magpies secured a 4-1 victory over Bradford City before beating Tottenham 2-0 in their last EFL Cup game. Eddi Howe’s team will now be aiming to secure a semi-final spot in the EFL Cup for the second time in a row.

Fulham have had to work hard to reach this stage of the 2025–26 EFL Cup. They booked their place by seeing off Bristol City 2–0 in their first game, edging past Cambridge United 1–0 in their second game, and then securing their place in the Quarterfinals against Wycombe Wanderers via a penalty shootout.
