Argentina barely qualified for the quarterfinals after beating Japan in the final round of the group stage. The Australians win their group. Is the favourite to win the match? We have a couple of options to bet on.
Australia prove their quality
Before the start of the Olympic tournament, Australia were rated by FIBA as the favourites to win the Tokyo-2021 tournament. Although the main favourite, of course, is the USA, the Australians lived up to their status in the group stage. In three games, Brian Goorjian's team had three wins, 84-67 against Nigeria, 86-83 against Italy, and 89-76 against Germany.
Patty Mills has been fantastic in Tokyo. The veteran multi-time NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs led the way for the Aussies with assists and scored important points. Mills had 25 points against Nigeria and 24 against Germany.
Argentina did not deserve to make the playoffs
Without the new Olympic system, Argentina would most certainly not be in the quarterfinals. The South Americans had dropped their first two games of the group stage, 100-118 to Slovenia and 71-81 to Spain, only to reach the playoffs in third place after beating Japan in the final round, where Rui Hachimura clearly couldn't handle the burden of a 97-77 lead. By all accounts, Argentina are the weakest team to reach the quarterfinals.
