Cardoza fought WBC world champion Adrián Hernández on May 11, 2013, after regaining the championship by beating Eliecer Quezada. Despite Cardoza's determined performance, in which he managed to swell Hernández's eye, Hernández defeated Cardoza by UD to retain his championship.
