Not so long ago, Canelo was the best boxer of our time, regardless of weight class, but Dmitry Bivol changed everything. We cannot say that the Russian fighter defeated the living legend without options - after nine rounds, Alvarez still led on points. The weight category for Canelo was unusual - heavyweight. 

The following two fights of Canelo only strengthened these talks. After the loss to Bivol, Alvarez had two wins that impressed no one. He defeated Gennady Golovkin, who had grown old, and John Ryder, a middleweight boxer, in a dull, boring, and routine manner.

The appearance of Jermell instead of his brother in the fight against Canelo was quite a surprise - for more than a year, he had been treating an injury (broken arm), and in the spring, he had convinced everyone that he at least had no plans to fight soon. 

Two of his previous fights (in 2021 and 2022) were against the same man, Brian Castano - a draw and a win by technical knockout.

Before that, there were three wins by knockout over modest fighters and a loss to Tony Harrison by the judge's decision.
