Austrian Grand Prix. Season 2025.
Circuit: Red Bull Ring
After a turbulent and controversial weekend in Canada, the Formula 1 caravan is moving back to European soil, more precisely to the picturesque Austrian region of Styria, home to the Red Bull Ring, one of the fastest and most compact circuits on the calendar. The Austrian Grand Prix traditionally brings dynamic racing, unpredictable strategies, and close wheel-to-wheel battles, and this time there is no shortage of reasons to be excited. There are a number of questions that need answers – can McLaren tame the infighting within the team, will Max's fans be satisfied after a home weekend, and is it finally time for Ferrari to take a step forward?

The Red Bull Ring is a track with a rich history and a technically demanding configuration, the combination of fast corners, sudden changes in altitude and a short, adrenaline-pumping circuit makes it a unique challenge for drivers and teams. The first Austrian Grand Prix was held back in 1964 at Zeltweg Airfield, but due to poor conditions and inadequate safety, that version did not survive. The real take-off came in 1969 when the Osterreichring opened, a cult track known for its long corners and fast sections, which quickly became a favorite among drivers. However, it also lost its place on the calendar over time due to increasingly strict safety requirements. After a thorough reconstruction in 1996, the track returned as the A1-Ring, in a shorter and modernized version. Since 2014, it has been called the Red Bull Ring, after it was taken over by Red Bull, and since then it has once again become an indispensable place on the F1 calendar. Today, Spielberg is a symbol of Austrian motorsport, and the track is one of the fastest, most compact and technically demanding arenas of the season.
Norris secures convincing pole position for Austrian GP, Verstappen only seventh
Lando Norris had his best season qualifying, more than half a second faster than second-placed Charles Leclerc. At the same time, Max Verstappen finished seventh after a late yellow flag in Q3 prevented him from completing a lap. Norris was fastest in the first two qualifying sessions and on the first lap of Q3 (1:04.268), two tenths ahead of Leclerc and almost three ahead of Piastri, while Verstappen drove the first lap of Q3 on the used soft set. But on the second attempt, Norris improved his time by almost three tenths and took his third pole position of the season, more than half a second ahead of Leclerc. Piastre failed to improve his time on the second Q3 lap, and Hamilton was fourth, leaving the top four drivers in qualifying the same as in Monaco. Russell was fifth as the fastest Mercedes driver ahead of Lawson in the RB, who was faster than his teammate Hadjar for only the second time this season. Verstappen finished only seventh after running the first Q3 lap on a used set of softs, and in the second, he had to discard a lap in the third sector due to yellow flags caused by Gasly's last-corner double-spin. Bortoleto managed to pass Q3 for the first time in his F1 career and took eighth place, beating Antonelli in Mercedes and Gasly in Alpine.
Leclerc's racing pace gives him hope of fighting for victory
Charles Leclerc is confident Ferrari's improvements have taken a step in the right direction, after securing a front-row start for the Austrian Grand Prix, giving him hope of a win. Leclerc equaled his best qualifying result of the season at the Red Bull Ring, setting the second-fastest lap time to sit between the two McLaren drivers. The Monegasque had already emerged as McLaren's biggest threat in Q2, and his improvement on the first lap of Q3 put him between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastre. Although he failed to improve his time in his final attempt due to a time loss in sector three, Leclerc retained second place as Piastre failed to set a better time. With Ferrari's pace usually more competitive in the race than in qualifying, Leclerc is keen to use his grid position to put the SF-25 straight into the fight for the top spot.
Expert Betting Tips
The main story remains the tense internal battle at McLaren. Oscar Piastri arrives in Austria leading the championship, 22 points ahead of teammate Lando Norris. The Montreal incident, in which they collided in a head-on battle, still resonates with Paddock. Norris has taken responsibility (which is entirely right on his part), but the question is whether it will be enough to maintain the trust of the team and, more importantly, to restore his own confidence. In Formula 1, there is a golden rule: teammates are not allowed to collide. Given the tight order at the top, McLaren bosses can no longer afford to destroy each other. Verstappen failed in the qualifications, he wasn't satisfied at all with the performances, but considering the stakes at the moment, we know he will push to the max to get on the podium and win as many points as he can.
OUR PREDICTION: Max Verstappen in top 3
