They performed noticeably better in the current regular season, and therefore were comfortably inside the cup eight, and now their game has completely fallen apart. At the end of February they were on a great run, winning six games in a row, and then overnight they started to play completely differently. In the five previous battles in March, the Wings had alternately lost to the Islanders 3:5, Florida 0:4, Colorado 2:7, Arizona 0:4, and the day before to Vegas 3:5. Detroit now sits only ninth in the Eastern Conference standings.

Detroit is having an amazing regular season, alternating ups and downs. In the second half of February, they gave away a 6-match winning streak, after which there was full confidence that the Wings would definitely make the playoffs, but they had not picked up a single point in five previous battles in March. Obviously, it's time for the Red and White to break the losing streak before the train has gone too far. The Blades have been playing pretty well lately, but they are well outside the top eight, so they have no real tournament motivation, which the visitors should take advantage of.
