In the opener, the visiting team started with a defeat, but then stepped up with a 42-10 win against Argentina in game 2. However, their first two games against South Africa ended in defeats, games that ended 31-27, and 18-12. Heading into this game, New Zealand have 7 points from 4 matches, leaving them seated 3rd spot.
