Borna Coric survived a tenacious comeback attempt from French qualifier Enzo Couacaud to advance to the second round of the US Open on Monday.

Coric, the Cincinnati Masters champion, appeared to have taken up just where he left off, taking the first set in no time. But things tightened up in the second set, with Couacaud upping his game and not being broken in the set. Coric eventually won the tiebreak with a solitary minibreak to go two sets up.

The World No. 193 battled his way back to square the match at two sets apiece over the following two sets.

Couacaud broke early in the final set, but Coric pulled level at 3-3. The Frenchman then broke and served for the match at 4-5, but the Croat broke him to love to keep the match alive. Coric won four consecutive games to win the four-hour and five-minute match 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 4-6, 7-5.

Coric scored 163 points, eight more than his opponent. In addition, he hit 74 winners and committed 81 unforced errors, compared to the Frenchman's 49 winners and 51 unforced errors.

The win extended the World No. 29's current winning streak to seven games. The winning streak began in the first round of the Cincinnati Open, when he defeated Rafael Nadal, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cameron Norrie, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Jenson Brooksby

Jenson Brooksby played well in the first round against Dusan Lajovic on Tuesday and appeared to be on his way to the second round when the Serb opted to quit in the third set.

The American, rated 43rd in the world, played a near-perfect performance, winning 14 consecutive games to win the match 6-2, 6-0, 3-0. (ret).

Brooksby, who reached the fourth round of the US Open last year, dropped only 10 points on his serve and won 60% of the receiving points to advance to the next round.

This year's finalist in Dallas and Atlanta, the 21-year-old, increased his season record to 20-16. He will now be looking to sustain his performance in the following round.

Coric is on a winning streak, but it was a hard-fought victory. Brooksby, on the other hand, was nearly faultless in the first round. This should be an exciting competition. Coric is a small favourite, but he may have to sweat it out once again.
