Laura Siegemund of Germany, 34, had to fight hard to win her first-round match in Cleveland, defeating Anhelina Kalinina 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
She began the competition as a qualifier and advanced past Akasha Urhobo and Francesca di Lorenzo to the main draw.
Siegemund is placed #216, owing primarily to a lacklustre, late season start. Her career highlights include many ITF victories in Austria and a quarterfinal appearance in Stuttgart. Her most recent competition was in Toronto, where she was eliminated in the first round by Lauren Davis.
Laura, on the other hand, has won the Lyon Open and the Miami Open doubles alongside Vera Zvonareva.
Liudmila Samsonova
45th in the world Liudmila Samsonova got off to a strong start at Tennis in the Land, routing Iryna Shymanovich 6-1, 6-0, earning 87% of the points behind the first serve.
The 23-year-old Russian came in Cleveland after winning her second WTA singles championship at the Citi Open, where she defeated Elise Mertens, Ajla Tomljanovic, Emma Raducanu, Xiyu Wang, and Kaia Kanepi.
Samsonova had her best run of the season. Her prior accomplishments were a semifinal appearance in Stuttgart, a quarterfinal appearance in Adelaide, and a fourth-round appearance in the Indian Wells Open. However, it hasn't been all that fantastic, as her record presently sits at 16-14.
Liudmila has all the makings of a budding star; she has already defeated a number of top ten players in her career.

Samsonova leads the series 1-0; she won their previous match in straight sets at the 2022 WTA Stuttgart. It's tough to see Siegemund winning this one; Samsonova is in form and has momentum, whilst the German has struggled recently. Expect the Russian to win, but with some difficulty.
