The centerpiece of the second round of men's Roland Garros, in our opinion, will be the match between Marin Cilic and Roger Federer. Five years ago this match would have been the finals of the Masters or the semifinals of the Majors. Now the veterans will meet only in the second round. Federer is the big favorite despite his lack of grass-court skills and practice. The Croatian is a convenient opponent for the Swiss, in 10 personal meetings Marin has only once beaten Roger, back in 2014 at the U.S. Open.
Marin Cilic: Estoril semifinalist
For Marin, Roland Garros is the fifth mainland tournament of the season. The Croatian started on the ground in Monte Carlo, where he was eliminated after his first match against Goffen. Then the Balkan had a good showing in Estoril, Portugal, where he reached the semifinals before losing to Norrie in two sets. In Rome Marin made Bublik nervous and fussy, but he could not oppose Tsitsipas. In Geneva he lost in two games to Stricker. On the RG, however, Cilic showed a good level of tennis against Rinderknecht. The Frenchman only put up a fight against the Croat in the first set. Marin won the other two sets on 1 and 2. Cilic showed a good ratio of winnings/annexes. However, in order to be competitive with Federer, Cilic still needs to improve decently.
Roger Federer: third match on the ground
If for Marin Roland Garros is the fifth ground tournament of the season. The Swiss on Wednesday will play only his third match of the season on the dirt. Before the WG, Roger played one match against Andujarin Geneva and lost in two sets. In Paris the Swiss had no trouble at all, beating Istomin of Uzbekistan, the 204th-ranked player in the world, in just an hour and a half. The Swiss looked confident in his first round match. However, Cilic is a much more serious opponent, and this match will certainly be a test for Roger.
Betting and prediction
Chilic has very little chance of success in Wednesday's match, and in general, you have to agree with the line. Marin's best days are long behind him. Whereas Federer, despite his advanced age, is still a top contender. True, in order to retain his status as a competitor, the Swiss has no right to squander his strength left and right. Federer has the task to beat Marin in three sets, let's see how the great Swiss copes with his mission.
