Sebastian Korda faced fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the second round after defeating Karen Khachanov in straight sets. The 22-year-old fell behind 3-1 in the first set and was unable to recover. At 5-3, he survived a set point on his own serve, but went on to lose the set.
Korda improved significantly in the second set, winning five games in a row to secure the victory. Tiafoe went up a break to begin the third set and led 2-0, but the younger American quickly levelled the score.
John Isner
Isner began his season in Cincinnati with a three-set victory over Benjamin Bonzi in the first round. In the second round, he faced Hubert Hurkacz, the runner-up of last week's Canadian Open.
In the first set, neither player was able to generate a break point, forcing the match to a tiebreak. Isner led 6-2, but Hurkacz saved three set chances before the American clinched the set on his fourth chance. With no breaks of service in the second set, it was again decided in a tiebreak.
Hurkacz came out on top this time, winning the set and tying the match. At the start of the third set, Isner broke serve for the first time in the match, jumping to a 3-0 lead. He held on to his lead and broke his opponent's serve in the last game to win 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 6-2.
