Fabio Fognini’s current form
Fabio is a renowned clay tennis player, but he is not always good on grass and hard court. After the Wimbledon debacle, where Fognini crashed out after the third round against Rublev, the Italian, for some reason, flew to Sweden, where he played just one match in Bastide against Carballes Baena. Naturally, Fognini lost, although he did put up a fight, 1-2. At the Olympics, the Italian won two matches against Sugita, a local player, and Gerasimov. It is important to note that Fabio has not lost a single set in Tokyo so far.
Daniil Medvedev’s current form
Medvedev reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, and before that, Daniil won the grass tournament in Mallorca, the first grass tournament of his career. Before the Olympics, Daniil got injured, Medvedev was preparing for Tokyo on an individual schedule, outside the national team. Still, so far, only Daniil and Karen remained from Russia in the individual men’s singles. All in all, Medvedev is probably Russia’s most realistic tennis hope at the moment.

Medvedev beat Fognini not too long ago on clay, the most comfortable surface for the Italian. The Russian is quite logically the favourite, especially considering that the tournament in Tokyo is played on hard court, which is quite a comfortable surface for Medvedev. I doubt that Fabio will be able to compete with Daniil. The levels of players are very different.
