Qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan, who surprised fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round, advanced after defeating Jordan Thompson in the second round on Wednesday.

Galan won the first set with a solitary break, but lost the next two to the Aussie before rising again in the final two games to win the match 6-3, 2-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

During the game, the two players had a few heated confrontations, with Thompson even participating in a verbal brawl with Galan's Colombian fans.

Throughout terms of statistics, both players gained 153 points in the match and broke each other six times over the course of the five-set contest, but it was Galan who won the most crucial moments to continue his astonishing run on his main draw debut at the U.S. Open.

The 26-year-old had won his greatest match of his career the night before, defeating World No. 5 Tsitsipas 6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.

It was an unlikely start for the Colombian, who had beaten Italy's Luciano Darderi, Australia's Max Purcell, and Italy's Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, 23, beat Hungary's Marton Fucsovics in a four-hour and eight-minute marathon to reach the third round of the US Open for the second time in his career.

The Spaniard, who reached the Round of 16 in his debut in 2020, won the first set in a tiebreak. The Hungarian battled back in the second set to draw the match and then won the third to lead by two sets to one.

Davidovich Fokina broke in the opening game of both the second and third sets, but he couldn't preserve the lead. However, in the fourth set, Davidvioch Fokina destroyed the Hungarian 6-0 to square the match once more.

Fucsovics raised his game once again in the fourth set, as both players held serve for 12 games to force a 10-point match tiebreak.

The Spaniard dominated the tiebreak to defeat the Hungarian 7-6 (7-3), 5-7, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6. (10-3).

Davidovich Fokina, who improved his season record to 20-21, defeated Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. That victory snapped the 23-year-three-match old's losing run. Davidovich Fokina's best finish this year was runner-up at Monte Carlo. He's is one win away from tying his career high at Flushing Meadows.
