Marin Cilic
Marin Cilic defeated Maximilian Marterer in the first round of the US Open, and the Croatian cruised to victory. The US Open is one of his favorite tournaments and the only grand slam he has ever won.
Cilic loves being back in New York and showed it in round one. A similar outcome is likely in round two against Ramos, whom he leads in their head-to-head 7-3. He didn't play poorly leading up to this event but was dealt two difficult draws.
Paul performed better in Montreal, but that was his greatest performance in recent memory. Alcaraz outperformed Ramos in Cincinnati, although both players are superior on the hard court.
Cilic will attempt to take advantage of the Spaniard's weakness on quick courts. The Croatian has an excellent 26-15 record, and his level in grand slam tournaments this year has also been extremely good. He seemed to be headed for a third round.
Albert Ramos-Vinolas
Albert Ramos is a competent hard-court player, certainly better than the ordinary Spaniard, which explains why his round-one victory over Gombos was not unexpected. The Slovakian player excels largely on hard courts indoors and not outdoors.
Ramos has a 26-24 record so far this season. His hard court record is 4-5, with most of his victories coming on clay. That is consistent with his history, which is why he will struggle against Cilic tonight. Cilic won their previous meeting in Madrid earlier this year.
Ramos will try to remain in this match, but until Cilic utterly destroys this match, it isn't easy to see how he can win.
He just never got used to this sort of court speed.
