Telstra first to deploy new IP gateway

Telstra will be the first operator to run its wireless core network on Ericsson's new SSR node running on the Evolved Packet Gateway (EPG).

Telstra estimates that the SSR-EPG will be fully integrated into its GSM, W-CDMA and LTE networks by the end of Q3.

Traffic growth is doubling every 12 months, so to manage that growth and offer subscribers diverse applications, Mike Wright, Telstra's executive director for networks & access technology, said "our network needs to be smarter." The EPG running on Ericsson's high-capacity SSR 8020 gives Telstra the network intelligence to effectively manage growth while maintaining quality services to customers, he said.

Supporting a variety of network functions -- from subscriber management to policy control to mobility support -- Hakan Eriksson, Ericsson's head of Australia and New Zealand, said the SSR 8020 enables fast and simply introduction of new services and "optimal use of network resources."

Huawei announces LTE-A inter-band carrier aggregation solution

Huawei has launched what it says is industry’s first LTE-A inter-band carrier aggregation solution.

The vendor claims the solution can significantly improve the utilization of discontinued spectrum resources and increase user peak rate and network throughput.

Huawei is demonstrating the solution at Mobile World Congress, showing inter-band carrier aggregation at 800MHz and 2.6GHz with peak throughput of over 225Mb/s.

ZTE unveils first TD-LTE pico base station

ZTE’s newly released TD-LTE multi-mode pico base station, touted as the industry’s first of its kind, is designed to mitigate problems associated with rapidly increasing mobile service data requirements.

The base station, based on ZTE’s SDR platform and supports LTE and WiFi simultaneously, can be deployed in hot spots, blind spots, cell-edge spots and indoors dependent on traffic. It is also compatible with micro, macro and femto base stations.

Ruckus Wireless introduces new line of small cells

Ruckus Wireless has launched SmartCell, a new line of small cell products that can help service providers ease access, backhaul, and core capacity pressures while delivering reliable wireless services in high-density areas.

The SmartCell, which combines a multi-radio, multi-function access point, allows mobile operators to gain a capacity boost from LTE small cells, cutting costs and complexity by co-locating and combining them with Wi-Fi access points, sharing site-lease agreements and backhaul.

Adax, Aricent collaborate on LTE EPC apps

Adax and Aricent Group have agreed to jointly develop solution for LTE Enhanced Packet Core (EPC).

Under the partnership, the companies will offer the EPCLite ‘Network in a box’ solution, a pre-integrated LTE core network offering to OEMs and system integrators, and provide complete solutions for niche small-mid subscriber markets such as public safety, rural and enterprise.

Belgacom selects Aepona for BeOpen API initiative
