Vodafone Australia has revealed plans to commence the rollout of VoLTE by December, as the first step towards moving all voice traffic to 4G.

The operator said it will start to offer VoLTE to post-paid customers on compatible devices before Christmas.

The company will issue an over-the-air software update to the initial group of supported devices - the Samsung Galaxy S6, S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ and Note 5.

Vodafone Australia CTO Benoit Hanssen said the move will allow the company to increase spectral efficiency to support 2.3 times more users per MHz, and support the refarming of spectrum from 3G to 4G.

“We’re continuing to invest heavily in our network to bring further enhancements, with seamless Voice over Wi-Fi one of the next features our customers can look forward to in the near future,” he said.

Vodafone Australia commenced lab and field trials of VoLTE in February The company's 4G network now covers nearly all of Australia's metropolitan population.
