Since the bout continued for more than three full rounds after the referee’s no knockdown call, and because the boxers necessarily adjusted to the referee’s ruling, the referee’s call was not outcome-determinative.
It is important to note that the controversial moment happened in the ninth round when Davis went down to one knee and then headed to his corner to wipe his face. Referee Steve Willis, who began the ten-count, decided not to call it a knockdown. The fight went the full 12 rounds and ended in a draw by majority decision.
Davis holds a record of 30 wins (28 by knockout) and no losses, with one fight ending in a draw. Roach’s record is 25 wins (ten by knockout), one loss, and two draws.
