FIFA President Gianni Infantino has been accused of breaching the organization’s statutes following public statements expressing support for Donald Trump’s policies. The comments were made at a business forum in Miami.
In the end he was elected based on the programme, based on what he said. He is just implementing what he said he would do. So I think we should all support what he’s doing because I think it’s looking pretty good.
Former chair of the Governance Committee, Miguel Maduro, stated that Infantino’s remarks constitute a direct violation of FIFA’s principle of political neutrality.
A breach of FIFA’s statutes could trigger an investigation by the Ethics Committee, which may result in sanctions ranging from a warning or reprimand to a fine or suspension from football-related activities.
Earlier, it was reported that Infantino will present the FIFA Peace Award in December in recognition of contributions to peace and unity. A FIFA representative also responded to Trump’s recent comments about potentially relocating World Cup matches.
