Kenya’s Under-20 women’s team captain Fasila Adhiambo has admitted that the girls who graduated from the Under-17 team are piling on the pressure and desire to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.
A huge chunk of the Under-17 girls’ squad that made history, qualifying for the World Cup for the first time ever, have also been promoted to the Under-20 team. Kenya played at last year’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, winning one game and losing two.
And, speaking to Telecomasia.net, Adhiambo says these girls are pushing the Under-20 team to achieve the same feat. The Under-20 Girls, the Rising Starlets, have progressed to the penultimate stage of qualification to the World Cup, after seeing off Ethiopia 4-0 in Nairobi and 5-1 on aggregate.
When we speak in camp, in the dressing room, they are always telling us about their experience at the World Cup and how nice it was and that really boils us, those who were not part of the team. We also want to experience such kind of joy and such kind of platform. We know that qualifying for the World Cup is huge for the country and for us as players because it will open doors for us to move to bigger leagues outside the country. It is a massive thing for a player’s CV to say that you qualified for the World Cup and that is what is pushing us to try and achieve this feat.
Kenya will face Neighbors Tanzania in the penultimate round of qualification in February 2026.
