Referee Punched In Turkish Championship Match Returns To Work

Turkish referee Halil Umut Meler, who was beaten in December 2023 during a Turkish championship match between Ankaragücü and Rizespor, has returned to refereeing.

According to Fanatik, the referee worked at the 20th round Super League meeting between Istanbulspor and Konyaspor.

Last December, Faruk Koca, now former president of Ankaragücü, ran onto the field after a championship game and punched the referee in the face, sending Meler to the hospital.

Earlier, the referee admitted that he planned to end his refereeing career after the incident. FIFA President Gianni Infantino called the beating of Meler unacceptable.
