The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has commenced preparations for facilitating the award of 5G licenses in 2020.

The regulator has asked all the nation's mobile operators to give presentations regarding their plans to ensure the smooth introduction of 5G services from next year, the Daily Starreported.

Bangladesh's second largest mobile operate Robi Axiata has already conducted initial 5G trials, achieving transmission speeds that met the operator's expectations, the report states.

Meanwhile the introduction of 4G in February last year has been a big success, according to the regulator. The market's operators have already signed up 11.7 million 4G users, and the number is growing daily.

There are currently 63.5 million 3G customers, with 11.9 million new mobile connections added in 2018. As of the end of December, there were 157 million active SIMs.
