SK Telecom has selected Samsung as the sole vendor in a nationwide NFV deployment for its dedicated mobile IoT network.

Samsung will provide its AdaptiV Core NFV solution for the rollout of an IoT network, which is scheduled to go live in the first half of the year.

SK Telecom plans to use the mobile IoT network for applications including package delivery tracking, CCTV monitoring and city-wide censor monitoring.

In 2013, Samsung completed trials of the vendor's virtualized evolved packet core (vEPC) technology over the SK Telecom network.

SK Telecom will use Samsung's vEPC to manage traffic to and from IoT devices, balance network load and manage hardware resources.

"NFV is one of the core technologies of next-generation mobile networks and will play a critical role in helping telecom operators in terms of network deployment, management and operation as well as service efficiency and rapid scalability.” Samsung head of networks Youngky Kim said.

News of the contract came the same week as both Huawei and China Mobile announced plans to set up NFV-based test labs in China to help develop the NFV ecosystem.
